Crunchy leaves and spiced lattes incoming! As the busy summer season starts to wind down, take the opportunity to pay extra attention to your home. Some TLC and a touch of paint goes a long way to making your personal burrow feel snug and cosy as the evenings grow colder.
To help you out, we have some handy pointers for making the perfect start to the season.
Sort your home, from the inside out
Autumn’s a great time to re-evaluate what you really need – and to declutter your home. To create a calm, ordered space you’ll need to be a little ruthless, so focus in on those hideaways and get the bin and charity bags ready!
Time for some serious cleaning
Why wait until spring to roll up your sleeves? Cooler days are the perfect time to pay your home a bit of extra attention.
Start by giving your kitchen a deep clean. Have a go at any stubborn worktop stains before wiping down your cupboard doors. Then having a good trawl through what’s inside, that tin that has an expiry date from 2004? It’s time to go.
Then turn your attention to the bathroom. It’s time to shine, and attack that stubborn grouting you might have successfully ignored over the summer.
This is also a great time to give your living room furniture the breath of life. Plump up the cushions and hoover up the bits using a brush attachment to avoid damaging the fabric. Add a blanket or two and your own personal nest is all ready for snuggling.
Introduce some natural accents
Once your home is ship-shape, subtly switch up your décor. Replace summer flowers with candles in jars or pine cones collected from family days out. Try a hint of print or add colourful accessories to bring neutral rooms to life. Finally, bring a little of the outside in with rattan or wicker for texture and rich oranges and red shades.
Freshen up your furniture
It might still be comfy, but if your sofa is feeling weary with age, now is a great time to invest in a new one. A new sofa instantly lifts an entire room and makes a great style statement.
With Christmas not too far away, now might also be the time to think about the dining room! If you’re feeding the family this year, consider trying an extending table on for size.
Now tackle the great outdoors…
Get windows sparkling
Condensation and low sunshine in the cooler months draw attention to grimy windows. You’ll need a bit of elbow grease, but with some window cleaner and a handful of newspaper, your windows will soon be crystal clear.
Be good to your gutters
Remove any debris like leaves and moss from your guttering before any autumn downpours. Or call in an expert if you don’t fancy climbing the ladder yourself.
Put the garden to bed
Give plastic dining sets a wipe down and store them away before autumn winds take hold.
Tidy up loose ends
Take a look at your home from the outside. Any tiles missing or damage to the roof? How about your aerial? Get everything secured in place now, before the wet months make it difficult.
Full metal jacket
Before the real cold weather comes, remember to lag the pipe for your outdoor water tap. A simple section of foam tubing will slip right on, meaning your pipes won’t burst in freezing weather.
Follow these tips, and you’ll be ready to enjoy the best of autumn when it comes: those frosty family walks, cosy sweaters, and cuddling up round the fire.
